Wanda Lee Hannah, 86, of McDade, passed away on January 25, 2023, at home after a bout with pancreatic cancer.
A native of Eupora, Mississippi, Wanda grew up in the Delta region, and she graduated as Valedictorian from Delta State College in 1958. She earned a Master’s Degree from Florida State University in 1959.
Wanda found her way to Texas, and after working in Houston-area public schools, she began what would become her stellar 38-year career, ultimately as Head Librarian, of The Kinkaid School in Houston. Her biggest legacies were book fairs and “A Visiting Famous Author” series. It was here that she met her husband David, a book salesman.
In 1999, she and David found their way to McDade. Here, community service involvement in multiple venues marked her “retirement.” People were drawn to her ready smile and relaxed demeanor, as they shared their troubles with her. “I’ll see what I can do” was always her response, and she was usually able to help matters reach a satisfactory outcome.
She is survived by a brother, Gwin Hannah of Florence, Mississippi;
Daughters, Dierdre Gaye Denley of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Lee Ann Denley of Austin; and her husband of 27 years, David Phillips.
To Dr. Meeneghan and staff at Texas Oncology; Nikki Hudnall and the very able and caring professionals at Hospice Austin: our deepest gratitude. This kind of experience can never be easy, but everyone who ”touched” our situation knew exactly what to do or say, to carry us through Wanda’s and our pain and uncertainty. You all have truly blessed us.
A Celebration of Wanda’s life will be held at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 5:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, Wanda has asked that contributions be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
