Shirlene Thomas

On Tuesday, November 1, 1949, McKinley and Sarah Thomas' baby girl was born in Taylor, Texas at the Dr. Dickey Clinic.

Shirlene attended Washington School in Elgin School District. Graduating from Booker T. Washington High School.  She was active with school activities during her school years.  She continued on to  higher education attending St. Edwards University and Huston Tillotson College.

Shirlene received Christ at an early age attending Pear Valley Baptist Church under Late Rev. Walker in Coupland, Texas.  Later, she joined and was baptized at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church under the leadership of the Late Rev. Q. S. Goins.  She loved her church and was an active choir member under the  musical direction of her cousin the Late Phillip (Binky) Thomas.  She really enjoyed singing in the choir and was a good soprano.  She and her sister Eldin also attended Mission I.  Recently, she joined the “We Care Ministry.

Shirlene married Richard Smith, Jeffrey Williams and currently married to Carl Cannon.

Shirlene employed by Huston Tillotson College as a Librarian for many years until she retired.  The students enjoyed going to the library to listen to talk to her and listen to her stories.  She never met a stranger. She loved scratch off’s and would drive to the store then scratch them in her car before going back home.

Shirlene was a real family person she loved to have them visit.  A dedicated Aunt to her nieces, nephews and even her younger cousins.

Shirlene is proceed in death by parents, McKinley and Sarah Thomas, brothers:  McKinley (Mack) Thomas, Jr., Charles Thomas, sisters: Willie Mae (Jean) Thomas Mitchell, and Ynolia Thomas Tramble.

Shirlene leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Carl Cannon; sister, Eldin Thomas Washington, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

There will be a viewing from 12:00-8:00 PM Friday, December 7, 2018, Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Shirlene's life will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, December 8, 2018, Mount Carmel Baptist Church, followed by burial in the Taylor City Cemetery.
