Richard “Ricky” Rodriguez, 69, passed away peacefully at home with his wife lovingly caring for him on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Born on September 18, 1955, at Fleming Hospital in Elgin, Texas, Ricky was the beloved son of Margarito and Rebecca Martinez Rodriguez. He spent his formative years in the “Brickyard,” a close-knit community that fostered the values of family, friendship, and service that he carried throughout his life.
After graduating from Elgin High School in 1974, Ricky enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country from October 30, 1974, to October 6, 1980. During his service, he earned commendations for his dedication, including a Letter of Commendation and a Good Conduct Award. His time in the Navy took him to Pensacola, Florida; Korea; Rota, Spain; and Misawa, Japan, where he honed his steadfast work ethic and served his country with honor and pride.
On May 31, 1981, Ricky married Doris Nickel of Elgin, Texas, beginning a love story marked by faith, devotion, and family. Together, they raised three sons: Luke Anthony, Mark Anthony, and Father Zack Anthony. Ricky’s greatest joy was his family, and he loved Doris and his sons deeply. As a man of great sacrifice and unwavering dedication, he worked tirelessly to provide for them and teach them the values of faith, hard work, and kindness that will forever shape their lives.
In 1985, Ricky became the owner and operator of Elgin Sonic, a role he held until his retirement in 2021. Over nearly four decades, he became a mentor and role model to countless young people in Elgin, often giving them their first job. Ricky’s leadership extended beyond business; he took pride in fostering confidence, integrity, and a strong work ethic in those who worked for him, leaving an indelible mark on the community.
Ricky was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served his parish community faithfully. Over the years, he taught catechism and enjoyed praying in adoration, deepening his relationship with the Lord. His faith brought him strength and peace throughout his life.
Ricky was happiest when surrounded by loved ones, whether playing golf with friends, grilling pork chops and sausage on the barbecue pit, or enjoying sunny days at the beach in Corpus Christi. He had a special bond with his little dog, Cuddles—affectionately known as the Boo Doo—who brought him endless joy and companionship.
Ricky is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Doris Rodriguez of Elgin; his son Luke Rodriguez and wife Alyssa of Minneapolis, Minnesota, his three granddaughters, Sarah, Vanessa, and Savannah; his son Mark Rodriguez of Elgin; and his son, Father Zack Rodriguez of Temple, Texas, along with two exchange students considered sons, Dominique Dudkowski Dube and wife Michal, and granddaughter Schnitzi, and Zhi Hai Li and wife Maggie, and grandson Yumi. He is also survived by siblings Margarito Rodriguez Jr. (Don), Gloria Rodriguez (Lindsey), Pauline Saragosa (David), and Danny Rodriguez (Marilyn). He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews, countless extended family members, and friends.
Ricky will be remembered for his profound love for his family, friends, and community, especially through the countless lives he touched during his nearly four decades at Elgin Sonic. He made a lasting impact on everyone he met, and his memory will be a blessing to all who knew him.
