Phillip Matthew Bayer

Phillip Matthew Bayer, age 77 of McDade, Texas passed away peacefully Sunday evening May 2nd, 2021 at his home where he lived since 1974.

Born and raised in Floresville, Texas to Valerian Bayer and Anita Grace Lindhart on November 8th, 1943.  Phillip was the second to youngest of six children.  He lived in Floresville, then Fort Worth until 1968 then moved to McDade in 1974.  He was married to Carol Ann McNeil on October 30th, 1965.  They had two children and two grandchildren.  He worked for and retired from the Department of Public Safety.

Phillip loved the outdoors, hunting, animals, gardening, family gatherings and helping others in the community.  As a boy he raised and sold watermelons on the side of the road and he later groomed his kids to do the same with his watermelon fields in McDade.  He loved growing them for the McDade Watermelon Festival.

He will be deeply missed by his two children, Paula Hobbs and Ross Bayer, grandson, Peyton Hobbs, and granddaughter, Priscilla Hobbs, daughter-in-law, Pam Bayer and son-in-law, Josh Hobbs, siblings, Valerian Bayer Jr., Martha Albert, Mary Jane Sultenfuss, and Dean Bayer as well as numerous nieces and nephews and several lifelong friends.

He was preceded in his death by his mother and father, his beloved wife, Carol Ann Bayer, and sister Anita.

Lifelong family friends will serve as pallbearers for who they referred to our dad as “Papa Bear”:  Michael Dube, Darrell Kanak, Russell Schulz, Robert Dube, Robert Shelby, and Randall Lewis.

A Visitation will be held Friday, May 7, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. A Service will be held Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Siloah Cemetery in McDade.
