Danny Smith passed away unexpectedly, the morning of Saturday, July 11, 2020. He leaves behind a world of heartbroken family and friends. All who knew Danny loved him.

Danny was born at the Hotel Dieu in El Paso, Texas. He grew up in Austin, Texas attending St. Louis Catholic School through the eighth grade, and Sydney Lanier High School, Class of 1975, and graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1979. He loved his Texas roots and spent many days with friends and family, hunting, fishing, and ranching.

Church was immensely important in Danny’s life; he was a regular fixture at Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin, attending bible study and Divine service every Sunday. Danny was an Elder at Grace Lutheran for 17 years, and also served as Chairman of the Congregation. He was always first in line to help anyone and everyone in any way possible. He was a man who cared for all, offering generosity, good advice and kindness wherever he went.

Adventure and hard work was no stranger to Danny; one of his first jobs was working in the oil business in Corpus Christi. During and after college he worked with his father’s surveying business, W. Harvey Smith’s Land Surveying. It didn’t take Danny long to become an entrepreneur, starting his own civil engineering firm, Nathan D. Smith Civil Engineering. But really, he loved ranching, whether at his own, the deer lease, or most recently at his sister Glenda‘s ranch. Fishing, hunting and exploring were in his blood. He could hardly resist the opportunity to get out on a ranch, fishing in Louisiana, or out into the wild for any occasion.

Danny is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lisa; sisters, Jean (Jimmie) Plentl, Glenda Flanagan, and Sandi (Ollie) Crinkelmeyer; his only daughter, Nicole (Matt) Johnson, granddaughter, Mia; Father and Mother-In-Law Duaine and Lyla Dockter, Sister-In-Law Rhonda (Kory) Opp, Sister-In-Law Cindy Dockter, cousin Troy (Terri) Smith and numerous other cousins; nieces Jennifer (David) Koenig, Whitney Davis (James Petroski) , and Mollie (Zack) Harter,Neely Meyers, BriAnne (Seth) Barrett, Brittany (Joe) Mueller; nephews Clint (Barb) Flanagan, Brad (Kaley) Opp, great-nieces and nephews; and great-great niece; a large extended family and many close friends that would consider him family. He was preceded in death by his parents, W. Harvey and Mildred Grohman Smith, and brother-in-law, Barry Dockter.

A visitation will be held from 5 -7 p.m., Thursday, July 16, 2020, at  Grace Lutheran Church. A Devine Service will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 17, 2020, at Grace Lutheran Church, 801 W. 11th St., Elgin, TX 78621.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Danny’s name. Church was a big part of Danny’s life and he was a passionate member and longtime elder.
