Modesta Muñoz Piña

August 17, 1958 — May 11, 2018

In the early hours of May 11, 2018, Modesta Muñoz Piña departed this earth for Heaven.  As we recognize her life and highlight the indelible mark of love, selflessness, and protectiveness she leaves on all of her family and friends, we respect her desire to have news of her departure received with nothing but joy and happiness.

Modesta was born in Karnes City, Texas on August 17, 1958 and was a member of Karnes City High School’s 1977 graduating class.  After graduation, Modesta moved to Houston, Texas, where she initially worked as a bank teller.  Over the years, Houston provided fertile ground for her professionally and personally, as it is where she met and married Gregory “Greg” Piña on July 7, 1979.  Together, they raised two sons – Gregory Jonathan Piña and Justin Ryan Piña.

After working 21 years in various roles, Modesta made the (oft ill-advised) choice to parlay her household partnership with her husband into a business partnership.  Somehow, the dynamic duo, managed to turn countless working hours and much blood, sweat and tears into a family business that afforded them a comfortable living and the blessing of humbly serving their local business community well.  Any time Modesta reflected on the life she and Greg built, she beamed with thankfulness and expressed earnest gratitude for all of God’s given blessings.

For Modesta, family came before all things worldly. When given the choice to travel or be with family, she chose family. Every. Single. Time.   Motherhood was a gift Modesta adored, and one she protected vigorously.  Her grand-babies brought her immense happiness; Tyzic, Landon, Lawson, Qadan, Jayden and Jordan each held a special place in her heart, which connected with every fiber of her being.  The only person Modesta loved more than her family was her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Modesta is survived by husband – Gregory Piña – of Elgin, Texas; son – Gregory Jonathan Piña – and grandsons – Tyzic Luke Piña, Landon Cole Piña, Lawson Everett Piña and Gregory Qadan Piña, III—of Houston, Texas; son – Justin Ryan Piña (Cody) – and granddaughters – Jayden Ryan Piña and Jordan Rae Piña – of Elgin, Texas; mother – Mary Treviño – of Elgin, Texas; sister – Raquel Printiss – of Houston, Texas; brother –Larry Muñoz (Debbie) – of Houston, Texas; sister – Betty Bailey (Floyd) of Dickenson; brother – Todd Muñoz (Andy)– of Houston, Texas; brother – Donald Muñoz (Felicia) – of Sealy, Texas; sister – Sandy Mott (Tyrell) – of Houston, Texas; sister – Debbie Jacob (Jeff) of Yorktown, Texas; and brother – Santos Mendez – of Elgin, Texas.

While the sound of Modesta’s loving voice, the warmth of her firm embrace, the comfort from her selfless acts of kindness, and the joy from her unexpected (sometimes quirky) gifts will be greatly missed, we rejoice in her excitement for her new journey, which she so eagerly awaited.

Babe/Mom/Modesta:  we love you; we celebrate with you, and we carry your memory with us from now until we join you again.  May God bless you as the faithful and humble servant you were among us and continue to be in Heaven!

A remembrance service for Modesta Muñoz Piña will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home in Elgin, Texas.  Viewing will start at 11:00 AM with a service commencing at 1:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made in Modesta’s name to your local charity of choice.
