Lessie Lee Prescott, age 90, of Elgin, Texas entered eternal rest on January 20, 2021 at St. David Hospital in Austin, Texas.
Lessie Lee Prescott was born to the Late Ella Mae Benford and Willie Ockelberry on March 26, 1930 in Bastrop, Cedar Creek, Texas. Her love ones who preceded her in death included her husband Henry Prescott, parents’ daughter Bobbie Pitts, sisters; Ruby Lee Brown, Rosie Lee Ockleberry, brothers’; Leland, Willie, and Jessie Ockelberry.
Lessie grew up and attended school in Elgin, Texas. She worked for the Ramsey’s for a number of years before moving away. Lessie enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She was never blessed with children, so her nieces, nephews and friends’ children became her children. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and became a devoted soldier of the Lord.
In 1965 Lessie was united in Holy matrimony in Ft. Worth, Texas to Henry Prescott, they made their home in Bremond, Texas and shared 40 wonderful years together until his passing.
A life well lived in Bremond, Texas:
Sister Lessie Prescott became a member of the New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C.A. Arnold. After the passing of Rev. Arnold, Rev. A.L. Harper became the pastor and Rev A.R. Morgan, Assistant Pastor.
Sister Prescott (affectionally called Granny) served as youth Sunday School teachers for girls, secretary of Sunday School and Secretary Emeritus after her health failed. She and Big Don would sing Jesus is alive and Well. She was noted for her strong handshake.
Granny was also noted for saying “a empty wagon makes a lots of noise” “the snake and the tongue are the same”
We always had a Christmas party at Sister Blanche’s house for old hens and Granny was the life of the party. Granny was Sister Blanche’s riding buddy. Sister Mary Taylor and Granny had a standing Friday date to Kosse Texas to eat fish. Sister Ayox and Sister Hendrick would pick her up for church. Granny called Sister Balance and Sister Caroline Edwards her sisters and they shared many vacations together.
Well, this is how she got the name Granny. When Sister Prescott came to Bremond she was always around my children and they wanted to know what they should call her and I told them that is your Granny, they did and everyone else started calling her Granny. When my grandson Martice McNeil went to school in Arlington Texas and needed someone on grandparents day, Granny and Bog Don would be there every year to support him. (Written by Sister Allene “Tootsie” Morgan.)
In 2008 Sister Prescott moved back to Elgin, Texas to be close to her family and reside with her niece Wanda and Lucius Hill. Once again, she united with the pleasant Bethany Baptist Church where she served, praising God until her health failed. Lessie, Aunt Lessie, Granny will be truly missed by her two sisters: Margaret Alexander and Mary Thomas. Daughter Cathryn Cummings (Anthony) Louisville MS, grandson Frankie Lee Fulton Jr, Sister-In-Law, Ruby Mae Ockelberry, and her many nieces and nephews. Pastor Harper and New Hope church family, Don & Tootsie Morgan and her many friends in Bremond, Texas.
"A life well Lived."
A Celebration of Lessie's Life will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 30, 2021. Interment to follow at the Elgin Latin Cemetery.
