On Monday, February 14 th , 2022, our beloved James L.V. McCarther, sweetly known as “Ball” heard the Lord say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” -Matthew 11:28
James McCarther was born on October 4 th ,1940 to the late Hugh and Norman McCarther in Elgin, Texas. He grew up on the westside of Elgin with his sisters, Hosea, Willie, and Lee Norma. James attended Booker T. Washington High School where he was active in agriculture and football. At an early age, he confessed a hope in Christ at Pleasant Bethany Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Green. In 1967, James moved his membership to Mount Carmel Baptist Church with the late Pastor Q.S. Goins and remained faithful under the leadership of Pastor Byron Green.
In 1963, cupid started sending darts and a beautiful relationship began to blossom between James and Dorothy. On Wednesday, October 19 th , 1967 with no formal announcement, the lovebirds made two trips to Austin for a license and blood test. At 4PM that same day, they were united in Holy Matrimony. Throughout the years, the two worked diligently together. In leisure time they enjoyed fishing, traveling throughout the US, and just spending quality time with each other. In their union of love, God blessed them with their beautiful daughter, Michelle. In addition, she shared with them four bonus children, their grandchildren.
He loved old cars, old westerns, and game shows, namely, The Price is Right , Jeopardy , and Wheel of Fortune . Everyone knew not to talk to him while he watched his game shows. He worked as a master carpenter. He built the family’s home which even the Big Bad Wolf could not blow down. He had a perfectionist carpenter’s eye and would notice the littles things like the slightest crookedness of a hanging picture from across the room.
James was a humble, man of God, with a giving heart, sharing it with his family and everyone he encountered. He always said to put God first and everything else will fall into place. Praise God that he was slow to anger because that was a button you didn’t want to push. LOL
Deacon James McCarther was a God-fearing man. He served under Pastor Goins and Pastor Green as Chairman of the Deacon Board for 50+ years. James was always willing to serve and take on any assignment that was placed before him. Using his talents as a carpenter, James played a major role in the construction of the interior of the church. He was all about giving and each Christmas he shared his love to the elders of the church.
Preceding him in death are his parents, three brothers, Clarence, Sherman, and Herman, niece, Charlotte, and nephew, Larry.
James built a legacy that will be forever cherished by his devoted wife of 54 beautiful years, Dorothy, his children, Michelle and Dennis, his grandchildren, Alethea, O’Taveon, Tametra, Terry, and Dennis’ children; his great-grandchildren, Jarrell and Jamir; his sisters, Hosea Wright, Willie Williams, and Lee Norma Nash (Freddie); his aunt, a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and certainly the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Family.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Dell Seton Medical Center at UT and Cornerstone Specialty Hospital.
