Horace Wayne (H. W.) Oden

Horace Wayne Oden of Elgin, Tx went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 5, 2017 in Bastrop, Tx.

Horace was born on January 3, 1935 in Jacksonville, Tx to James Jackson Oden and Estelle LaDonia Kinney Oden.  He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Laverne “Vernie” Oden.  Horace married Nancy Virginia Taylor of Jacksonville on August 2, 1953.  The couple were married 63 years.

Horace entered the United States Air Force at 18 years of age and proudly served 26 years, attaining the rank of Master Sargent, working as a Flight Engineer on mostly C-130s.  Horace also retired from Civil Service.   He lived in Jacksonville, Waco, Dickinson, Elgin, and Bastrop TX, Anchorage, AK, and Doyline, LA, where he made lifelong friends along the way.  He owned and operated Oden Custom Farming in Elgin for 30 years.

Horace was known as a hard-working, generous and humble man who was an outstanding example for his family of four generations.  He loved spending time with his large extended family, especially with the children.  He loved making children laugh and pulling pranks!  He was passionate about buying, raising and selling cattle. He also loved John Deere tractors, making family road trips, and playing dominos.

Horace Oden is survived by his loving wife Nancy and their four children; Michael Horace Oden, wife Rita of Salado, Texas; Jeffrey Dell Oden, wife Rhonda of Elgin; James Britton Oden, wife Trish of Jacksonville; and Janice Oden Rampy, husband Gene of Bastrop.   He was a proud and loving PaPa to his grandchildren:  Tara Heine, Josh Oden, Jake Oden, April Oden, Rachel Bomer, Ryan Bomer, Chase Rampy, Jessica Workman, Tyler Oden; John Oden, Summer Oden, LaNae Oden; Josh Brown, Matthew Brown, Jacob Brown and 16 great grandchildren.  Horace also left behind a host of nieces and nephews as well as a multitude of friends.

Horace Wayne Oden was a Christian of the Baptist faith.  Visitation will be 6 – 8 pm on Monday, May 8, 2017 at  Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, 604 N. Highway 95, Elgin, Texas  78621.  The services will be conducted by Mark Nygard of Elgin, on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 10:00 am at Providence-Jones. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Elgin,
