On May 30, 1948, at 8:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Hospital in Austin, Texas, God blessed Mr. Homer Manny and Mrs. Mary Jane Ellison Cyphers with a son. The parents chose to give him his earthly father’s name Homer Manny Cyphers, Jr. They raised this son to be humble and kind. He attended school at Campbell Elementary, Kealing Junior High, University Junior High and Austin High School.
Church Life : He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church; Elder George Winn is his Pastor and his Father in the Ministry. He was a devoted Primitive Baptist Preacher and believes that all things are pre-ordained by God and should be done accordingly. He was ordained as Deacon at Mt. Pleasant and later was called into the ministry. He preached his first sermon in 1996 under the leadership of Pastor George R. Winn. He served as Interim Pastor of the Bastrop Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, the Rehoboth Primitive Baptist Church and the Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church. He was also a part of the Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church. He served as the President of Providence District Church School Congress.
Livelihood : He started working during his teen years for the Piccadilly Cafeteria and the Brackenridge Hospital, then later he worked for the Wapple Plater Company, but the White Swan Division in Austin, Texas would become his long-term place of employment. He was a legend in that company, whatever they needed done Homer Cyphers could do it! He was a part of the Transportation Management Team, but he preferred to drive because he could meet the public and minister. He retired after 30 years with the Two Million Miles Safe Driving Award. Homer was a precise man, he believed that “If you are going to do something do it the right way! Don’t half do it, always do your best”. Anyone who knew Homer knew he was an avid fisherman and gardener. He also was a CB fanatic. His CB handle was “Little Boy Blue.” He hosted the Boy Blue Talk Show of Austin, Texas.
His Family : Homer Cyphers was blessed with one brother Samuel Cyphers (deceased) and three sisters: Geraldine Cyphers (deceased), Debra Hope (deceased) and Joyce Cyphers, and a special brother and sister, George Gage and Deloris Roe.
Homer met that special person that God ordained that he would spend his life with, in August 1973, Mrs. Christine McMarion Cyphers and together they loved and cherished seven children: Derrick ( wife Phoebe) , Tony D., Lavanya Denise, Michelle Yvette, Leonard ( wife Karen) , Ann’e Elizabeth and Monita ( husband Mike), 22- Grandchildren and 20- Great Grandchildren. He adopted two special young ladies from next door, Breshona and Hannah. They would come over and sit with him on the front porch and listen to his talks about black history and the sites that he traveled, and he also gave gardening advice. When it was time for them to visit their parents, he would go sit on the porch to wait. He is leaving us behind as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws, special lifelong friends and Mt. Pleasant Church Family. Let’s make his life count for something.
2 Timothy 4:6-8 King James Version
6
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
7
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
8
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Homer was letting me know that he was getting ready to move upstairs, because he said, “Chris get a pencil and paper, and sit down here and write this down”. He gave me instructions on what to do when he could not be with me any longer. He made a diagram on how to cut the yard, he told me to wear my mask when I have to go places and to put things where I can remember where they are. He is upstairs now but he left us a legacy, let’s remember what he stood for. He always showed respect and he was Humble and Kind. He lived out the scripture and what his parents taught him, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you”. Ephesians 4:32
