Edith Marie Werchan

December 26, 1938 — February 4, 2023

Edith Marie Steffek Werchan, age 84, died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family on February 4, 2023. She was born December 26, 1938, on a farm near Granger, TX to Josef and Filomena (Krejci) Steffek and was the youngest of eleven children. Edith loved her parents and siblings with all her heart. They instilled in her their love of God and the Catholic Church that remained with her until her last breath. English was her second language and she was very proud of her Czech heritage.

In 1959, Edith married Charles Werchan and they moved to Austin. Edith and former spouse, Charles had six children, four boys and two girls.

Edith had a heart of service. She worked at Sacred Heart Catholic School as a second grade teacher's aide for many years. She touched the lives of many of the students there and was loved by all her students and co-workers. She worked at Travis State School and was a very gifted and dedicated teacher of the mentally challenged. She was also an advocate for the unborn.

Edith lived in Austin until 2022. She moved to Waelder, TX with her daughters and really enjoyed being out in the country again. So many memories returned to her and she often reminisced about her childhood on the farm in Granger with her parents and eleven brothers and sisters. It brought her much joy and comfort.

Edith loved the beach, going to Mass, praying her rosary, gardening, dancing, traveling, the snow, desserts, and her country. She was a devoted Catholic throughout her life and spent many of her days at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Austin.

Her greatest joys were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Left to honor Edith and remember her love are her six children; Charles Werchan, Jr., Steve (Leicel) Werchan, Gwen (Fred) Berger, Alan Werchan, Janice (Karl) Jaques, and David Werchan. Fourteen grandchildren; Mary, Johnny, Tommy, Therese, Matthew, Sarah, Trudy, Gabriel, Francis, Sam, Katie, Alan, Hannah, and Gwen; nine great-grandchildren: Michael, Luke, Ethan, Noah, Ella, Andrew, David, Jack, and Parker and many nieces and nephews. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, grandson, Charles Werchan III, and great-grandsons, Kolbe and Francis.

Edith was loved by all who met her. She could make you laugh and hold great conversation. She cared for all the people she taught and worked with, especially the mentally challenged people at Travis State School. People from all over Austin knew her from her many jobs she held while she raised her children. Edith was the strongest and most faithful woman. She raised her children to know the Lord, love Him, follow Him and trust in Him. That was her greatest goal in life.
