Delbert Thiessen

August 13, 1932 — February 9, 2022

Delbert D. Thiessen passed away on February 9, 2022.

He is survived by his wife and companion of 41 years, Evelyn Denise Stokes, his daughter, Kendell Simon, and grandsons, Brandon Mayfield, Justin Elrod, and Matthew Simon.

Delbert was born in Julesburg, Colorado on August 13, 1932. He served in the Army in Korea. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver, a Master’s degree from San Jose State, and a Ph.D. From the University of California at Berkeley. He taught biopsychology at the University of Texas at Austin for 35 years where his students often praised him with standing ovations. Upon his retirement, he was awarded the title Professor Emeritus. He developed with his wife a homestead and ranch that was completely off the electric grid. He took up the harmonica and played music with friends at local Bastrop restaurants. He also took up painting and created his own genre called “Concept Art” that depicted historical and mythical persons and events. He published many books and articles as a professor and after his retirement. His most popular non-academic book married his mastery of pocket billiards with psychology and is entitled “Mind Over Billiards.”

As per his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no service. He requested that those wishing to do something in his memory make a donation to the ASPCA.
