Charles passed away the evening of Wednesday July 8 th 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  Charles was born September 3 rd 1937 in Houston, Texas to Hampton Lee and Juanita (Glasscock) Hayes.

Charles enlisted in the Air Force immediately after graduating from Alvin High School. He served 33 years active/reserve and retired on March 30 th 1994. Charles impacted many lives with his friendly smile, bright blue eyes, and larger than life personality.  His word was as solid as his hand shake which is a rarity in today's world. Charles always put others before himself and was a role model to all who knew him. He cherished his time with family, especially summer trips to various lakes.  Charles was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed his long mid morning walks through the country, fishing a good honey hole, and bow hunting. He loved attending Tejano dances with his wife Iris and could often be found on Saturday nights listening to his favorite band, the Rumors, and belting out his famous Cajun “ayyyee” yell. His homemade biscuits and hot rolls were second to none and will be missed by all who loved him!

Charles is preceded in death by his parents Hampton Lee and Juanita (Glasscock) Hayes, his sister Sandra Hayes, two brothers Lee and Brent Hayes, and his step son Steven Mills.

Charles is survived by his wife of 26 years, Iris (McPhaul) Hayes, his children Eric Hayes (Kirsten), Sandra Walker (Steve), Kevin Mills (Norma). Poppa Charles was greatly admired by his grandchildren Ashlee Smith (Mitchell), Dustin Mills, Heather Lundgren (Justin), Lyndsey Gordon, Katrina Mills, Jacob Mills, Merina Mills, Logan Gordon, Brayden Hayes, Brea Hayes, Lola Walker; great grandchildren Emma and Jace Smith, and Liam Sanchez. He is also survived by his sister Sharon Smith (Gerald) and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends

No longer by my side, but forever in my heart. –Unknown
