Charles M. Goodson

September 17, 1940 — August 18, 2020

Charles Malcolm Goodson, 79, of Giddings passed away peacefully on August 18, 2020.

Charles, known to most as “Ikie” was born on September 17, 1940 to Sheriff Vernon Goodson and Bertha Cottrell Goodson in Dime Box, Texas. Ikie graduated from Giddings High School and is most remembered in his youth as the fiercest lineman in Central Texas.  His legacy on the field was memorialized when he was named All District, All CenTex and All State in 1958.  He was offered three scholarships to Texas Colleges and ultimately settled on North Texas State.  He made the decision based on his respect for the coach at the time.  Ikie found him to be tough, fair and kind; the same qualities that followed Ikie and served him well through his life.

Ikie started his career as a teacher and a football coach.  But, as fate would have it, Ikie took a summer job as a car salesman and the “winds changed course”.  A salesman was born!  Ikie worked for NAPCO Paint and owned and operated a lumber yard in Thorndale, but ultimately settled on the car business and his career spanned 50 years.  If anyone in Central Texas needed a car; Ikie was the man to call!

As a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Giddings, Ikie knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and genuinely enjoyed his church community.  Ikie was a veteran of the U. S. Army and loved God, Country, and Sports!  Over the last decade, he spent many hours on the phone with his sister, Verna, revisiting past plays and anticipating the next week’s upcoming games.  Ikie’s love of sports might only be matched by his love of a great joke!  He was well known for “prank wars” with lifelong friends, Honest Howard, Garland and Tommy.

All who have known Ikie will attest that “no greater love hath a man for his son, than Ikie for Thomas”.  And that unbreakable bond between the two, was only cemented further when his granddaughter Lydia arrived.  Lydia was the apple of his eye and he delighted in every moment they had together.

Ikie is survived by his Son, Trooper Thomas Goodson and Thomas’s wife Tammy Goodson, his granddaughters Lydia Goodson, Brianna Mckenzie and Haily Mckenzie, his Sister’s, Mary Frances Symmank of Houston and Verna Goodson Shaw “Chubby” of San Angelo and many Nephews and Nieces.  He is Proceeded in death by his father, Sheriff Vernon Goodson, his mother Bertha Cottrell Goodson, and his brothers, John Goodson and Sheriff Joe Goodson.

Funeral services will be held on August 28, 2020, at 10:00 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, 600 Sunrise Ave., Giddings, TX 78942.

Following the funeral service, the family will proceed to the Giddings cemetery to spread his ashes on his parents’ gravesite.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Grace Lutheran Church or First Baptist Church of Giddings, TX.
