Carl David Torn Jr., of Elgin, Texas, passed away Monday, January 18, 2021 at the age of 90 years and 51 days.

Carl was born on November 28, 1930 in Pflugerville, Texas to Carl Sr., and Mary Torn. He was married to Helen Bell Peterson on October 15, 1955 until her passing on December 14, 2004. Carl later married Carolyn Sanders on June 7, 2008.

Carl graduated from Manor High School in 1949. After graduating he worked in Road Maintenance for Travis County. Later he served in the National Guard for seventeen years. In 1964 Carl opened Torn’s Gulf Station in Manor, Texas. Carl also held the office of Manor ISD Tax Assessor Collector and served on the School Board in his community. Upon retirement his many jobs included: working at Department of Public Safety, A-Line Auto Parts, Bastrop County Assisted Services, and doing odd jobs for his family.

Carl’s hobby was work and providing for his family. He was a man who could not sit down and loved his sweets, especially Blue Bell Ice Cream.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Helen, his brothers Roy and Bobby and his grandson Bradley.

Carl is survived by his wife Carolyn, his sons Gary Torn and wife Lucy of Lexington, Russell Torn and wife Shannon of McGregor, daughter Joyce Ann Herzog and husband Terry of Manor, and Nina Nygard and husband Mark. Daddy was a unique individual with many fine qualities.  He loved to help those he met along the way.  He was willing to talk to anyone.  He was tough and gentle too.  You could catch him often humming a tune that none of us really knew where it came from.  We are going to miss him greatly, but his legacy will live on through his family and his friends.

A Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday, January 21, 2021 Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Carl’s Life will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 22, 2021 Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Manor Cemetery.
