Carl Glen Newstrom (aka “Big Daddy”) age 59, loving husband, father, brother, son and dear friend to many, passed on Thursday, January 7, 2021. Carl was born in Elgin, Texas to Glen and Mickie Dell Newstrom on September 30, 1961 where he lived until his untimely passing. He married the love of life, Susan “Eileen” on November 30, 1986.
Carl graduated from Elgin High School in 1980. During his high school years and earlier, he enjoyed working on the farms around Elgin, bailing hay, stripping cotton, cutting maze and drinking a few adult beverages in between. After that, he decided to get a bit serious and started a career with the Texas Department of Public Safety which lasted for 30 years.
Carl loved Elgin and was a member of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years where he held several positions throughout the years such as President, Vice President, Board of Directors, as well as Fireman of the year in 2001.
Being a lifelong resident of Elgin and wanting to serve and protect the community, Carl decided it was time to run for office…meaning the Bastrop/Travis Counties ESD No. 1 Board. Carl was elected to the Bastrop/Travis Counties ESD No. 1 Board in 2012 and served as a Commissioner for over 8 years. He was re-elected to his third term 2020.
Carl had a love for cooking, BBQ, fishing, being at his Port O’Conner get-a-way, and with family, friends -just having a good time – SALUD!
Carl leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years, Eileen, his loving daughter, Amanda Brooke Sanchez, husband, Rick Sanchez and loving daughter Ashley Paige DeWitt. He adored and loved his grandsons (finally got some boys!), Kyle McCoy and Oakley Cole who both adored their PawPaw. He also leaves behind his loving parents, Glen and Mickie Newstrom, brother and sister-in-law, Bradley and Tina Newstrom along with many in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many, many friends.
