Bobby Joe Mcclendon

March 6, 1935 — February 25, 2022

Bobby Joe McClendon reunited with His Lord and Savior on February 25 th , 2022, at the age of 86.  From an early age, Bobby was passionate about the ideals that would shape his life. Faith, Family and Sports. He was a man of character that sought to share his wisdom with those that he loved. He was an avid listener, the best storyteller, and the most patient man you will ever meet [mostly due to his lovely wife of 64 years.] He was slow to anger and quick to encourage. He was a practical joker with a vivacious, deep laugh that always followed his mild-mannered pranks.

He was born in Austin, Texas to Bob and Gladys McClendon on March 6, 1935, and raised in Elgin. He was an active boy who loved the outdoors and all sports but was most fond of football and basketball.  While he earned many athletic accolades, if you knew Bobby you would know that he put little value on the awards and was more concerned with the lessons along the way. After graduating from Elgin High School, Bobby attended the University of Texas and earned a Bachelor of Science degree.

It was during this time that he met the love of his life. As fate would have it, they met on a blind double date while they were set up with the other person. Shortly after, he married Joan Elizabeth Renota Arras in November of 1957. Bobby spent the rest of his life celebrating their love.

The newlyweds left the central Texas area and ventured to Corpus Christi to start his coaching career. It was while in Corpus that they built a family. Robby was born in 1960 and Shannon followed soon after in 1962. Bobby continued coaching in Del Valle, Elgin, and eventually came out of retirement to coach in Round Rock. To him, winning the game was not nearly as important as the kids winning at life.

After his final retirement, Bobby enjoyed fishing, his dogs but mostly he enjoyed chasing his grandchildren and great grandchildren all over the state at their various events.

While going through his belongings, the family discovered hundreds of thank you notes from parents, players, administrators, and fellow coaches. This further confirmed the wonderful legacy of a life well lived. Bobby once wrote, “The writer of Ecclesiastes says that a good name is better than perfume.” Bobby gave the McClendon family a good name. A simple man from Elgin, impacted students, family, and friends across the country.

Bobby will be greatly missed. His surviving family includes wife, Joan McClendon, Son, Robby McClendon, daughter Shannon Greeson and husband, Rick, granddaughters, Katy Hargrove and husband, Aaron, Patty Henna, Kelsey Chappell and husband, Blake, and Shelby Greeson. Great grandchildren include Nora, Grey, Aubrey, Evan, Brooks, Brixton, and Briggs.

Bobby is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Gladys McClendon, his brother, Jack McClendon, and his granddaughter, Jenna Greeson. Our family is forever grateful that our Lord gives us strength and comfort when he calls his children home.
