Bertha Chapa Martinez, age 86, of Elgin was called home by our Lord on December 28, 2020. She was surrounded by family at the time of her passing.
She was born October 8, 1934 in Zuazua, Nuevo Leon Mexico to Filomeno Chapa and Heriberta Villareal de Chapa. Bertha worked as a teacher in Zuazua and when she married her husband Hector she moved to Elgin, Texas. After she had her 2 daughters, she started working in the cafeteria of the Elgin Primary School. Bertha studied hard and received her GED and then applied for the Teacher’s Aide position teaching Bi-lingual students. She enjoyed teaching and meeting so many students that after she retired, they would always stop her at the stores to say hello.
Bertha was a devout Catholic who attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elgin, Texas and always loved helping people in need, she also volunteered her time at Saint Vincent de Paul. She was also a Eucharistic Minister with her sister-in-law, Rebecca Rodriguez, taking communion to nursing home residents.
She was married to Hector Martinez on February 12, 1955. They had two daughters, Rosemary and Bertha. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her husband, Hector Martinez; a son, Jesus Hector Martinez; and brothers, Hernan Chapa and Oscar Chapa.
Visitations will be held on December 30, 2020 at the Elgin Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elgin, Texas. Burial will follow in the Elgin Latin Cemetery.
Survivors include: Daughters, Rosemary Lucio and husband Ralph, and Bertha Ostiguin and husband Lupe; brother Luis Chapa and wife Maria Elena; brother-in-laws, Cecilio Martinez and wife Gerri, Fletcher Ramirez; sister-in-laws, Dolores Cantu, Maria Magdalena Chapa; 4 grandchildren, Nicholas Lucio, Marcus Lucio, Jacqueline Ostiguin and Jacob Ostiguin; numerous nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.
The Family of Bertha Martinez would like to give a special Thanks to Dr. Jorge Salinas from the Serenity Personal Care Home and the Trinity Hospice Staff for taking such loving care of her during the last moments of her life.
