Arthur Arnold Matetzschk

May 1, 1939 – June 26, 2022

Arthur was born at home in Travis County, Texas on May 1, 1939, the third of six children, to Ernest and Ella Schmidt Matetzschk. He was baptized as an infant at St. John’s in Richland, Texas. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was proud of his German heritage.  It was in his boyhood home that a love for faith and family was instilled along with a strong work ethic and a love for animals. Days were spent playing and working alongside his brothers and cousins. Shortly after his graduation from Manor High School in 1957 he went to farrier school in Oregon where he learned his professional trade of horse shoeing.  He traveled many miles and was widely known for his skill, craftsmanship, and tall tales. He had no fear of any animal and was a very strong man all his life.   He was a member and took leadership roles in both the Lost Pines Riding Club and the American Paint Horse Association. The later years of his life were spent in Bertram, Texas with his son, Robert, and his family, who were his primary care givers.

Arthur is preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Glenward Matetzschk, Lawrence Matetzschk, Pearl Kerr, and Elaine Farris.

He is survived by his children, Allen Matetzschk, Terri Black and her husband, Charlie, Robert Shelby and his wife, Kendra, his grandchildren, Taylor and Trevor Black and Allison Shelby; his sister, Fay Jordan, his sisters-in-law, Shirlene Matetzschk, and Marjorie Matetzschk, and his brother-in-law, Clyde Farris and many dearly loved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 10:00 AM at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elgin, Texas. Interment will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
