Annie Cathryn Duggan, 81, of McDade, Texas entered eternal rest on November 12, 2021.
Cat, as she was known by most, was born on July 25, 1940, in Carrollton, Mississippi. Her parents were Silas and Edith (Abbott) Phillips. She had five siblings.
After getting married, Cat moved to Texas where she attended barber school. She bought property in McDade and cut hair out of her home. She also occupied her time by volunteering. She volunteered for nursing homes, hospice, food pantries and churches. She started volunteering at an Elgin nursing home in 1991 and noticed a need for lap quilts for patients. She started crocheting quilts. However, she wasn’t making them fast enough for the demand. Her sister, Pat, showed her a faster way, sewing quilts. Her ministry was started. Cat always said that she was extremely blessed. She felt fortunate to have such dear friends. She had many sewing machines donated, along with loads of material. She stopped counting quilts at 5000. She estimated she had doubled that number by 2021, if not over it.
She is survived by two sisters, Nancy Zachary and Patricia Cuneo, of Mississippi, and a brother, James Phillips of Georgia. Surviving grandchildren include Christy Rice, Destiney (Queen) McAllister and Hope Magness, along with five great grandchildren, Hannah, Luke, Paislee, Jaxon and Jayden.
Cat was a member of the Elgin Cowboy Church.
Cat was a special lady with a caring heart. Her comfort quilts touched many people. All her quilts were made with special love. We find comfort in thinking of Cat in heaven telling the story of her “Comfort Quilt Ministry”. We will all miss you Cat!
