Jose Angel Navejas was born on July 1, 1929 in McDade, Texas to the late Jesus and Juana Navejas, he entered into heaven on September 19, 2010. Jose is survived by his wife of 60 plus years Trinidad and preceded in death by his son, Francisco, grandsons, James Edward Beltran, Lee Angel Trevino and David Reynosa, Brother, Juan Navejas and sister, Agripina Benavidez. Rosary will be recited on Tuesday at 6:30PM at Elgin Providence Funeral Home. Celebration of Mass will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elgin. Burial will follow in the Elgin Latin Cemetery.
At a very young age Jose Angel’s parents immigrated to Anahuac, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and settled in a small ranch outside of the town. Jose Angel spent all his childhood in Mexico and attended school there till the age of 16. At the age of 19 he married Trinidad Tovar and their first child was born about a year later. In 1951 he moved his family back to the place where he was born; McDade, Texas and then to Elgin where he lived for the rest of his life.
Jose Angel and Trinidad raised 10 children during their 60 plus years of marriage. The children include Margarita, Gloria, Jose Angel Jr, Suzy, Estella, Gabriel, Suelema, Francisco (deceased), Janie, and Robert. The 10 children brought Jose Angel and Trinidad 35 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Jose Angel worked at Elgin Brick Company and Stabeno Construction for about 18 years. At Elgin Brick he made many friends who introduced him to Sacred Heart Catholic Church and he started a relationship with the Church that would continue for 60 years. Jose Angel was a lifelong member of the Sacred Heart Society and the Cursillo movement within the Catholic Church. Jose Angel helped with so many fund raising projects at Sacred Heart including annual fiestas or the “Jamaica” as they were called back in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. During his last years participating in the annual Fiesta fund raiser he was always committed to selling the most raffle tickets that he could and he would always hit up all the kids, grandkids, friends and just about anyone else to buy raffle tickets.
Jose Angel retired at the age of 62 after working at the University of Texas for about 20 years. His last job was Assistant Supervisor for Building Services.
