He retired as the regional sales manager with Cargill Seeds in 1987 and embarked on a new career of spending more time with B and his family, travel, being a general handyman, a woodworker, and continuing to follow his beloved Cornhusker football team. He served as an elder in the Church of Christ in both Fremont, Nebraska and later in Elgin, Texas, and was a grandpa to many and mentor to everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, Ray and Florence (Harrison) Wicks, three sisters, Shirley Trapp (as well as her husband Bill), Lois Baumgartner, and JoAnne Glenn (as well as her husband Patrick), he and B’s infant daughter Kathy, daughter Vickie Jo, and their beloved granddaughter Jill Helmick.
He is survived by his bride of 69 years, B, three children: Marci Nichols of Wisconsin Dells, WI, Nancy (Rich) Russo of Manor, TX and Steve (Valerie) Nichols of Katy, TX, as well as nine grandchildren: Matthew (Stacy) Hamburg of Mauston, WI; Jay (Miranda) Helmick of Kearney, NE; Melissa (Matt) Kingsley of Oregon, WI; Gator (Susan) Russo of Austin, TX; Boomer (Erin) Russo of Austin, TX; Alicia, Trevor, Donovan and Holly Nichols, all of Katy, TX and five great-grandchildren: Chase and Rylee Hamburg, Desmond and Lillianna Kingsley and Paige Helmick, and a host of nieces and nephews.
