Lupe Hernandez

Guadalupe S. Hernandez, 86, was called home in the early Tuesday morning, January 24, 2017. He was born February 1, 1930 in Houston, Texas.

Guadalupe grew up in Mathis, Texas where he met and married his wife, Felicita Cantu, on January 24, 1951. Together, this union bore thirteen children, six sons and seven daughters. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Elgin, Texas to raise their family where Guadalupe began numerous years of work, starting at the Elgin Butler Brickyard. He retired with eighteen years of service for the University of Texas at Austin. Being the hardworking man that he was, he continued to work at Carter’s Grocery here in Elgin, where you could always be greeted by his smiling face.

He is preceded in death by both of his parents; his brother Simon Alderete; and children, Ramiro Hernandez, Frank Hernandez, and Janie Diaz.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Felicita C. Hernandez; his four sons, Ruben Hernandez and wife Brenda, Simon Hernandez, Jimmy Hernandez and wife Cathy, Paul Hernandez and wife Christine; and six daughters, Gloria Hernandez and Juan Pruneda, Irma Castillo and husband Joe, Lupe Garcia and husband Adalberto, Nora Robles and husband Chris, Martha Mendez and husband Frank, Lucy Martinez and husband Robert; 28 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Raul Margain and Raymond Margain; and numerous extended family and dear friends.

Guadalupe was a devout Christian who never met a stranger. He loved unconditionally his family and anyone that he held dear to his heart. His joyous laughter and love for music will be missed by all and will be forever in our hearts.

The family will receive friends at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home of Elgin, at 6:30 PM on Thursday, January 26. A Celebration of Guadalupe’s Life will be held at Providence-Jones Family Funeral home of Elgin at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 27. Interment will follow at the Elgin Latin Cemetery.
