Ethel "Florine" Stroud passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at the age of 89.
She was a loving mother and matriarch, whose children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
Florine was born in Trenton, Tennessee in February 25, 1927 to James Alvah Morrison and Hester Lenora Morrison.
In the early 1950s, she married Eugene Smith, giving birth to Alvah Gene Smith in 1953. She soon became a widow, and remarried in 1956 to James Vernon Hassell. They were blessed with the births of James Earl Hassell and Lenora Ann Hassell. She was once again widowed in 1966.
She remarried in 1969 to W.Z. Stroud, and remained happily married for over 25 years until his death in 1995. She was a collector of photographs, salt & pepper shakers, funny T-shirts, earrings, and knick-knacks. She loved to travel, and never missed a chance to go to Walmart or Goodwill, or a Gaither Gospel Concert. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
She is preceded in death by her three husbands, Eugene Smith, James V. Hassell, and W.Z. Stroud; by her parents James Alvah Morrison and H. Lenora Morrison; by her sisters Lucille Farris, Helen Fickey; by her brothers James B. Morrison, Delma Morrison, William Earl Morrison, Ray Morrison; and by her great-grandson Nikolas Claymore Taylor.
She is survived by three sisters; Merlene Williams, Frances Morris, and Alvalene Fosters, her children; Gene Smith, James Hassell, H.C. Stroud, Jody Stroud, Lenora Shope (and husband Rick), her grandchildren, Ray Haralson, Jacklen Taylor (and husband James), Jaime Fitzpatrick (and husband Kevin), Rein Shope, Vernon Hassell, Josh Haight, Emily Sprabeary, Kyle Stroud, Anna Stroud, her great-grandchildren; Damian Charles Fitzpatrick, Dakoda Caden Fitzpatrick, Dylan Douglas Fitzpatrick, Dixon Carter Fitzpatrick, McCayla Kinnaman Taylor, Richard Canon Taylor, Athena Corinna Taylor, Emma Raelei Haralson, and Jack Ryan Haralson, and her long-time caregiver Tina Hassell, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and loved ones.
Services to be held Friday, June 17, 10:00 a.m. graveside at McDade Cemetery with a gathering afterward at the McDade Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elgin Lions Club Charity Shop.
