Charley Smith, of Taylor, Texas, was born on March 28, 1928 to Wayne and Mamie Smith of Liberty Hill, Texas passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 22, 2016.
After attending and graduating from Liberty Hill Schools, Charley enlisted in the United States Navy and served in World War II. Upon returning from service, he was employed by Southwestern Bell, where he served dutifully for 31 years before retiring. Soon after retiring from Southwestern Bell, Charley was appointed by the City of Elgin as Municipal Judge, serving the community in this capacity for 12 years. In 1984, Charley opened Pleasant Grove RV Park in Elgin, Texas, which is still in operation today.
As an active and well respected member of the community, Charley served as a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge 328, President of the Elgin Chamber of Commerce, member of the Elgin V.F.W., member of the Kiwanis Club, and a member of the Presbyterian Church of Elgin for over 50 years. Charley also had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War memorials as a participant in Honor Flight Austin in 2014.
Charley’s family members fondly remember frequent trips to Ruidoso, New Mexico where Charley enjoyed spending time during his retirement. Charley is remembered for his dedication to his family, faithfulness to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, his relentless work ethic, and for his service to his country and community.
Charley was truly blessed before departing this life. Charley is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Smith Shrewsberry.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy Smith; daughter, Kathy Smith Cannon of Elgin, Texas; two grandchildren, Monica Justice and husband Robert of Elgin, Texas, Eric Cannon and wife Brianna of Lewisville, Texas; five great grandchildren, Tristen Heinzke, Tyler Justice, and Kwen Justice of Elgin, Texas, Champ and Easton Cannon of Lewisville, Texas; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, March 24, 2016 Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Charley's Life will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 25, 2016 Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. Masonic Graveside Services will follow at 1:30 P.M. in the Liberty Hill Cemetery in Liberty Hill, Texas.
