Ernest Howard Perkins was born May 13, 1926 in Alum Creek Texas. He was 89 years old when he went to meet his Lord on January 27, 2016. His parents were Leonard and Clara Perkins. He was raised on the Colorado River and grew up loving to fish, however, he never learned to swim.
He met the love of his life, Floy Grace Cross in Bastrop. They were married 64 years and resided in Elgin most of those years. His beloved wife, Floy passed two years ago. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Perkins Lane of Georgetown, and his sons Ardley Perkins and Gene Perkins of Elgin. He had eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren
Ernest worked as a heavy equipment operator, an electrician apprentice, but was best known for being an excellent mechanic. He could just listen to an engine and diagnose the problem. He was also very practical and inventive. We would joke that he could fix anything with a little bailing wire.
He was a member of Coon Neck Church for many years. Ernest was raised by Godly parents and loved the Lord all his life. When he became blind and could not walk, he had a lot of time to pray and intercede on behalf of his family and friends.
Ernest never met a stranger. He had a great sense of humor and liked to play little jokes on people. He also had a nickname for almost every friend. Most of the time we never knew their real name.
His greatest achievement was his marriage and family. He was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Before Dad got his angel wings he said tell everyone "I love you all". He was especially grateful to Mrs. Diann Tucker for the many hours she would care for him in the nursing home and the family wants to thank the staff at each nursing home and hospital for the kindness that they extended to Dad in his final years.
We would not say good bye but instead he got a kiss on his forehead and a soft "night, night, Daddy". We'll be seeing you!
A visitation will be held 11:00 AM Sunday, January 31, 2016, Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, with services beginning at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow at the Alum Creek Cemetery.
