Michael Arlen Reid passed away at home in Elgin, Texas on January 17, 2016. He was born in Houston, Texas on May 12, 1932 to Marvin Frederick and Gladis Carmichael Reid.
He is Survived by his wife Cordelia (Delie) Sprong Reid; his son Michael Blake Reid of Gainesville, Georgia; Daughter Mary Milissa Davis and husband James David Davis of Lexington, Texas; his grandchildren Jordan Chrishell Reid of Gainesville, Georgia, Thomas Michael Smith and wife Kristyn Baer Smith of San Antonio, Texas, and James David Davis II of College Station, Texas.
His extended family includes niece, Penny Doyle, great-niece Katie Doyle, and great-nephew, Taylor Doyle of Austin, Texas. His cousins are David and Anita Turpin of Austin, Andrea Turpin of Waco, and John and Stephanie Turpin of Silver Springs, Maryland.
Michael graduated from Schreiner Institute of Kerrville, Texas and then attended the University of Texas and the University of Houston. He served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, New York. Michael met his wife of 60 years, Cordelia Sprong, while at the University of Texas and they later married in Houston in February 1955.
Michael began his career in the oil field supply business with Continental-Emsco in Houston. He traveled extensively overseas to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East as an international sales representative. He later worked in sales for BJ-Hughes in Houston.
After retiring in 1990, Michael and Cordelia moved to Austin where they opened a teacher supply store, Teachers’ Alley, Inc. They sold the store in 2007 and moved to Elgin. He was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, reading, and gardening. He made friends easily and especially enjoyed swapping stories with old and new friends. He made many new friends in Elgin through the Coffee Club, Prime Timers, Garden Club, and his neighborhood Civic Club.
A visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, January 21, 2016, Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, with recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 PM. A Memorial Mass Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 22, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
