Ascencion Ace ‘”Chon” Sanchez, 64, formerly of Elgin passed away on Sunday May 18th 2014 in Georgetown TX.
He was born on May 26th 1949 in Ciudad Victoria, Tam. México, to Guadalupe Martinez Sanchez and Olivia Cepeda Sanchez. Ascencion grew up in Elgin, TX after emigrating from Mexico at the age of 9. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1969 and was voted most talented. After high school he attended Texas State University, in San Marcos, receiving Bachelors in Art and Spanish in 1973, and a Masters in Spanish in 1975.
He found his first educator position in El Paso TX at the El Paso Community College until 1980, until pursuing a career teaching for the Gadsden ISD in NM where he educated, influenced, and entertained thousands of young minds during his tenure. He was an educator of Art, Spanish, Mariachi, Drivers Education, and taught English in Juarez, Mexico. He was devoted to his community of young minds and spent his free time creating Murals which are displayed in several Schools and public areas. Where most saw a blank wall or floor, he saw a blank canvas. He served on the school board, and was a union steward and president for Gadsden Federation of Teachers where he helped to better the teaching environment for his peers. Ascencion received the honor of Educator of the Year award in 2008.
He enjoyed creating murals, sculpting, and poetry. He enjoyed playing and teaching music, such as Mariachi. He was passionate about his teachings, an avid coin collector. Perhaps more than all, he enjoyed storytelling to all he encountered as his stories are some that have been and will be repeated for generations to come.
