Wesley Oliver Whitten

Wesley Oliver Whitten Age 90, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013.

He was born in Elgin, Texas January 11, 1923. Oliver attended school in Elgin and was an outstanding athlete, excellent on the Wildcat football, basketball, and track team. Following graduation, Oliver enlisted in the Navy and served his country proudly in the Pacific during WWII. After returning to Elgin following the war, he met and married his sweetheart of 65 years, Helen Marie Burke. The couple moved to Brazoria, where Oliver found work as a carpenter for the Dow Chemical Company; a job he would hold for 32 years before retiring in 1982 and returning to Elgin. During his time in Brazoria, Oliver was a member of the First Baptist church and was respected and liked by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Helen, Sons David and Darice of Elgin, Randy and wife Patty of Lake Jackson, and Glen and wife Cheryl of San Antonio, as well as 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Irby and Maggie Whitten of Elgin and two sisters; Gladys McCreery of Elgin and Elizabeth Holmes of Temple.

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00pm Thursday, December 26, 2013, Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. Celebration of Life Services will be held 1:00 pm Friday, December 27, 2013, First Baptist Church, Elgin. Interment will follow at Elgin Cemetery.
