Barbara June Stockley

October 12, 1925 — December 5, 2013

Barbara June Donnell was born in Snohomish, Washington, on October 12, 1925, to William Howard and Pearl Donnell. She moved with her family to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1933 and graduated from high school there in 1943. She then worked for the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor until she enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1955. She received her Master of Arts degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957, then moved to Austin to become a freshman composition instructor at The University of Texas. She went on to become a book editor at the University of Texas Press for many years until retiring. She married Franklin Stockley in Austin in June 1959, and they lived for decades on their ranch near the Type community in southeastern Williamson County, north of Elgin. She was widowed in 1993. In 2006, she moved into Elgin, where she was very active in the Elgin Historical Association, playing a significant role in the establishment and subsequent operation of the Elgin Depot Museum. She passed away on December 5, 2013, at the age of 88, and is survived by her brother, Alan Donnell of Ojai, California; nephews Howard Donnell and John Goode of Elgin, Texas; niece Helen Donnell of Lake County, Florida; and cousin Gordon Gray of Seattle, Washington. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial remembrances may be sent to the Elgin Historical Association, P.O. Box 1234, Elgin, TX 78621-1234.
