Richard "Rick" Charles Harkins

June 17, 1961 — April 22, 2013

Richard "Rick" Harkins, age 51, of Elgin was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 22, 2013 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 17, 1961. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1979 and from Southwest Texas State University in 1983. Rick was owner of Harkins HVAC Company.

Rick is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Joann Raschke Harkins, and their three children, Wesley, Heather Rupert and husband Stephen and Lauren Konarek and husband Adam. His parents Jay and Kay Harkins and siblings, Mike & Susan Harkins, JD & Donna Harkins, James & Pam Harkins and Melinda & Pat Watson; in-laws, Dell Raschke, Margie & Ben Kyser, Rose Travis, Vivian and Dan Brandt and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Rick was a member of the St. Peters’ Lutheran Church. He was a dedicated community leader serving on the Elgin City Council and Bastrop-Travis County Emergency Service District. Rick also served as a coach for numerous youth sports organizations and a volunteer for many local organizations.

Rick was a loving husband, father, brother, son and friend to many. He was a role model to his children and enjoyed many adventures with them. Rick enjoyed playing golf, hunting, going to BBQ cook-offs and spending time with family and friends. Rick brought love and joy into everyone’s life. With his quick wit, unique sense of humor and smile, Rick could light up a room. He was a man of unwavering work ethic and loyalty. Rick took pride in everything he did up until his very last day. Rick was the rock of our family and he will be sincerely missed.

A visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, April 25, 2013 Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, Elgin. Celebration of Life Services will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, April 26, 2013 First Baptist Church-Elgin. Interment will follow at the Elgin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Rick’s family asks that memorial gifts be made in his honor to Cattleman for Cancer Research/M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, American Cancer Society, Austin Hospice Christopher House or Elgin St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
