Maurine Kelley finished her earthly journey on Sat., September 24, 2011 in Elgin, Bastrop Co. Texas.
She was born Vera Maurine Lewis to William Wesley and Katie Pauline Simmons Lewis on January 16, 1921 near Clyde, Callahan Co. Texas. At a young age the family moved to Howard Co. She grew up in Cotton farming Communities around the area until age nineteen when she met and married Joseph Leon Glover from Elgin, Texas on Oct. 9, 1939. He died in a fatal car crash in 1951. Maurine later married Loyd Reed and he also died in 1958. In 1961 she married Andrew Brock “Red” Kelley in Big Spring, Tx. who passed away in 1980.
In 1988 she and the family agreed to move her to Elgin, next door to daughter Melba and family.
Maurine was a happy person, taking life’s problems in stride, trying hard to please God in everyday life. She was a faithful Christian and a member of the Church of Christ which meets at the Colonnade Center in Austin, Tx. Known to family and friends as “grannie” she loved and cared for the children of several Elgin families for about thirteen years including her two great grand-daughters, Sarah and Ashley.
Maurine is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two brothers, Auda Vee Lewis and Vernon Lewis and grandson-in-law Paul Kimberlin.
She is survived by her daughter Melba Speckels and husband Mike of Elgin; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They are grandson Waymon Rogers and wife Jacque of Elgin; their daughter Sarah Rogers of Austin; Ashley (Rogers) Stroud and husband Warren of Taylor. Also granddaughter Patricia Kimberlin with her sons Dakota and Crockett of Taylor; three nieces, one nephew, Nancy Murphy and husband Bill of Big Spring, Tx and their family, Sharon Self and husband Wade and family of Batchelor, La.; Mary Brooks and husband Brent and family of New Braunfels, Tx. Bill Lewis and wife Janet of La Grange, Tx., one sister-in-law Josephine (Lewis) Massey of Big Spring, Tx.; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, neighbors and her Christian family.
Visitation was Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011 at 9am at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home. Services were Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 10:30 AM at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home with Officiating Evangelist Ron Lehde of Austin and Garren Stroud of Yoakum, Tx. with burial following at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Elgin, Tx.
