G.W. Turner, 87, of Elgin, Texas passed away June 2, 2011. He was born Feb. 3, 1924 to Grogan Weir Turner Sr. and Georgia Withers in Shreveport, La.

G.W. graduated at 17 and went straight into the Navy. The first navy ship he was on was with prisoners getting amnesty. When he got out of the navy he drove a truck for his uncle in Pecos, Texas then for Shell Oil Company.

Shortly after he became a Christian and decided to become a minister. He was pastor of First Baptist Church in Elgin and also ministered to the homeless. G.W. went to school at Howard Payne University and then in Ft. Worth, Texas.

He loved to play golf, dove hunting and also fishing. G.W. also helped start Cedar Valley Baptist Church.

G.W. is preceeded in death by his 1st wife; Yolanda Turner and son Dennis Lee Turner. He is survived by his wife Marguerite Turner; daughter, Yevonne Turner McCalvin; step-daughter, Barbara Moreno; step-son, David Sedberry; Grandson, Darrel Lee McCalvin; great-grandchildren, Victoria Lee McCalvin and Zephon L. McCalvin; 4 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Jo Montgomery; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Memorial service will be Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1 PM at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, Elgin.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Austin Baptist Chapel.
